Question: What should I do if I smell gas?

Answer: For your protection, we add a distinctive-smelling chemical called Mercaptan to our natural gas.  This distinctive odor allows you to detect the slightest amount of natural gas in the air and take the appropriate safety precautions. If you would like us to send you a gas odor "scratch and sniff" card, please let us know using our email form and one will be sent to you.

If you smell gas indoors DO:
  • Leave the building.
  • Turn off your gas meter.
  • From another location, call the emergency number for your area anytime day or night to report a natural gas odor.

If you smell gas indoors, DO NOT:

  • Open your windows.
  • Turn any electrical switches on or off.
  • Smoke.
  • Use the telephone.
  • Take any other action that might cause sparks.

When you call to report a gas leak, be ready to tell the Intermountain Gas Company representative where the odor is most noticeable.  Is it near an appliance? Near your meter? Or just a general odor?  The representative will also ask how long you have been noticing the odor. We will send a service technician to the location of the reported odor as quickly as possible to determine if there is a problem. There are no charges associated with this type of call.

Question: What should I do if my carbon monoxide detector is going off?

Answer: Anytime your carbon monoxide detector begins to make noise, you should first consult your manual to determine what the sound is indicating.  It could be sounding because the battery is low.  If your carbon monoxide detector is indicating the presence of carbon monoxide, please call the Intermountain Gas Company emergency number for your area.  We will send a technician as quickly as possible to determine if you have carbon monoxide in your home or office.  There are no charges for this type of call.

Question: What should I do if I hit a gas line? 811 - Know What's Below...Call Before You Dig

Answer: In today's modern world, many vital services like natural gas, telephone, and power come to you underground.  Gas pipe to a home is usually plastic--easily cut by digging equipment.  If you hit a gas line, call the emergency number for your area as soon as possible.  We will send someone to repair the break.  Do Not Attempt To Repair The Line Yourself.  Keep people away from the site and stay nearby until someone from Intermountain Gas Company arrives.

To avoid hitting a gas line, call Digline to mark the location of your gas line before you begin digging.  There is no charge for Digline service.

For more information, download our Digline brochure as a .pdf file. (If you don't have the Acrobat reader, you may download it from Adobe's website.)
